CheckPapuaNow.com – A magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck Sarmi Regency, Papua, early Tuesday morning at 01:53 WIT. According to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG), the earthquake’s epicenter was on land at a depth of 24 kilometers, with coordinates 2.22 S, 139.11 E. The epicenter was located approximately 57 kilometers southeast of Sarmi District.
BMKG also reported that the tremor was felt in other areas beyond Sarmi. “The earthquake was also experienced in Memberamo Regency and Jayapura City, which are about 178 kilometers from the epicenter,” BMKG stated through its infoBMKG app. So far, there have been no reports of significant damage or casualties resulting from the quake.
Despite the tremors felt in various locations, BMKG has confirmed that the earthquake does not pose a tsunami threat. “We urge the public to remain vigilant but calm and not to be influenced by unverified information until a thorough analysis of the event is completed and reported by BMKG,” BMKG explained in its written statement.
