CheckPapuaNow.com – The Election Supervisory Board (Bawaslu) of Indonesia is intensifying efforts to locate a missing district election supervisor in Central Papua. Herwyn J. H. Malonda, a member of Bawaslu RI, revealed that Bawaslu Kabupaten Mimika has been coordinating with Basarnas (National Search and Rescue Agency) and the local government from February 15 to 16, 2024.
“In our search efforts, we continue to coordinate with various parties, including Basarnas and the local government. The family of the victim has also been facilitated to participate in the search from February 18 to 22, 2024,” said Herwyn at the Bawaslu RI building in Jakarta on Tuesday.
However, despite these efforts, the search has not yielded the desired results. Herwyn stated that Bawaslu RI is ready to participate further in coordination to ensure the safety of the missing election supervisor.
“We may coordinate further to confirm their whereabouts and collaborate with security forces. Considering that this incident occurred in Papua, we will ensure the safety of the election supervisor while continuing to coordinate with various relevant parties,” he added.
Chairman of Bawaslu RI, Rahmat Bagja, also emphasized that they are closely monitoring the situation. “The latest information we have received is that the election supervisor entered the forest. Although the search is still ongoing, all relevant parties have made maximum efforts to find them,” Bagja said.
Bagja also added that despite the concerning incident, the electoral process in Mimika Regency continues as planned. Currently, the vote tallying process for the 2024 Elections is ongoing, covering various levels of elections from national to regional.
“The 2024 Elections involve various national and local political parties, as well as presidential and vice-presidential candidates. The national vote tallying process is scheduled to continue until March 20, 2024, in accordance with applicable regulations,” explained Bagja.
The continuation of a democratic and transparent electoral process remains the primary focus of Bawaslu RI despite the challenge of finding the missing election supervisor. All efforts are being made to ensure the safety and transparency of the electoral process across Indonesia.
