Checkpapuanow.com – The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Region V Papua has issued a tsunami advisory for coastal areas in Papua, following a powerful magnitude 8.7 earthquake that struck near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia, on Wednesday, July 30.
Danang, head of the Geophysics Observation Work Team at BMKG Papua, stated that although the epicenter was located far from Indonesia, the quake’s strength carries potential implications for northern parts of the country, especially coastal Papua. “This is a major seismic event. With a magnitude of 8.7, there is a possibility of tsunami waves reaching nearby regions. Areas in Papua that may be affected include Jayapura, Sarmi, Supiori, Manokwari, Biak Numfor, Raja Ampat, and Sorong,” he explained during a press briefing in Jayapura.
According to BMKG’s current assessment, Papua’s coastal zones are under a tsunami alert status, with estimated wave heights ranging between 0 and 0.5 meters. The agency forecasts that tsunami waves could reach Jayapura and nearby regions at approximately 4:30 p.m. local time, although the arrival time may vary depending on the location.
In light of this development, residents in coastal areas have been advised to exercise heightened caution. Danang urged the public, particularly those living or working near the shoreline, to temporarily halt all beachside activities. “We strongly recommend that residents, especially fishermen and coastal communities, refrain from any activities along the beach until further notice. This is a precautionary step to minimize risks,” he stated.
So far, no ground shaking or structural damage has been reported in Papua. Nonetheless, BMKG continues to monitor the situation closely and is in active coordination with the Regional Disaster Management Agencies (BPBD) in affected areas such as Jayapura, Sorong, and Nabire.
Local authorities in Jayapura have already begun disseminating tsunami advisories through infographics and public announcements, encouraging residents to stay away from the coastline. Similar measures are expected to be implemented in other potentially impacted regions.
Danang also emphasized the importance of relying on accurate and official sources for information. “We urge the public to remain calm and vigilant. Please follow updates from BMKG and heed instructions from local government officials. Avoid spreading or reacting to unverified news,” he said.
BMKG continues to work alongside regional agencies to ensure timely updates and provide necessary guidance. The public is reminded to stay informed and adhere strictly to safety advisories as the situation develops.
As of this report, BMKG has not issued a tsunami warning, but advises ongoing vigilance due to the strength and location of the quake.
