Checkpapuanow.com – Indonesian authorities have confirmed the identities of six out of eleven victims killed in a brutal attack allegedly carried out by an armed separatist group in Papua. The victims were reportedly civilians working as gold panners in the region.
Brigadier General Dr. Faizal Ramadhani, head of the 2025 Peace Cartenz Operation, stated that six victims—identified as Aidil, Sahruddin, Ipar Stenli, Wawan, Feri, and Bungsu—have been formally identified. The remaining five victims are still undergoing forensic examination.
“This tragic incident involved civilians who were attacked while carrying out their daily work. The nature of their injuries indicates they were subjected to extreme violence, including slash wounds, gunshots, and injuries from arrows,” Ramadhani explained in a statement released on Wednesday, April 9, 2025.
The attack is believed to have been carried out by an armed separatist group that refers to itself as the West Papua National Liberation Army (TPNPB), under the self-proclaimed commands of Kodap XVI Yahukimo and Kodap III Ndugama.
Authorities have strongly condemned the attack, labeling it a serious violation of human rights. Brig. Gen. Ramadhani, who also serves as the Deputy Chief of Papua Regional Police, emphasized that the operation’s task force will take all necessary legal measures to pursue justice for the victims and restore safety in the area.
“We firmly denounce this brutal act. It is not only a heinous assault on innocent civilians but also a clear breach of fundamental human rights,” he stressed.
The victims’ bodies have been recovered from the scene, and security forces are continuing their investigation to locate and apprehend those responsible.
In a related statement, the Head of Public Relations for Operation Peace Cartenz 2025, Commissioner Yusuf Sutejo, urged the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information.
“We call on everyone to stay composed and not fall victim to misinformation or provocative narratives. Let’s work together to maintain peace and security. Official updates will be shared periodically, based on verified data and developments in the field,” Sutejo said.
He added that the task force is committed to handling the case through a professional and measured legal process. The ongoing security efforts, he noted, aim not only to resolve this particular incident but also to ensure the continued safety of civilians throughout Papua.
Security operations have since been intensified across several vulnerable regions. Local communities have been advised to report any suspicious activity and remain in contact with law enforcement for safety advisories.
This latest incident adds to a series of violent events linked to separatist groups in Papua. While efforts for peace and development continue in the province, authorities face persistent challenges in dealing with armed resistance and safeguarding civilians in remote areas.
Officials reaffirmed their dedication to upholding peace and security, noting that protection of civilians remains a top priority. Investigations are ongoing, and further information will be released as it becomes available.
