CheckPapuaNow.com – Tension between the University of Indonesia’s Student Executive Board (BEM UI) and the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) resurfaced after BEM UI posted a controversial message on its official Instagram account @bemui_official. The post, titled “TNI Abusing Civilians, Stop Human Rights Violations in Papua!”, highlighted alleged human rights violations by security forces against Papuan citizens.
The post included information about several cases of Papuan civilians being abused by security forces, referencing circulated videos showing alleged acts of abuse by the TNI. BEM UI emphasized that the violence was not an isolated incident but part of a pattern of human rights violations occurring in Papua over recent years. They asserted that such actions contradicted the state’s obligation to uphold human rights as stated in the constitution and laws.
“The circulation of videos depicting security forces, particularly the Indonesian National Army (TNI), abusing Papuan civilians has shocked the public. This isn’t the first case; data shows a high level of human rights violations, including violence by security forces against civilians in Papua over recent years. This situation clearly violates the state’s obligation to uphold human rights as stipulated in the constitution and laws,” BEM UI stated in its release.
BEM UI also stressed the need for the government to conduct comprehensive investigations into these cases and ensure a fair and transparent legal process. They called for a dialogue-based approach as a solution to address the aspirations of the people, rejecting violence as a response that would only exacerbate the situation of human rights violations in Papua.
However, the response to this criticism was not one-sided. Several TNI soldiers in Papua issued challenging responses to BEM UI. One soldier even dared BEM UI to participate in Community Service (KKN) in areas inhabited by the Armed Criminal Group (KKB) in Papua.
“I’ll give my salary for 10 years if BEM UI can carry out KKN in KKB areas. REMEMBER THAT’S MY PROMISE IpangLybaz,” wrote one TNI soldier via the TikTok account @NdripangLybaz_SMT#14.
Similar responses came from internet users who supported the TNI soldiers, arguing that BEM UI did not fully understand the situation in Papua.
However, on the other hand, there was also support for the criticism voiced by BEM UI. Some internet users emphasized the importance of constructive criticism in efforts to improve conditions in Indonesia, including the enforcement of human rights in Papua.
The controversy between the University of Indonesia’s Student Executive Board and the Indonesian National Armed Forces highlights the complexity of the situation in Papua and the need for dialogue and concrete steps to address human rights violations. Although sparking debates online, it is important for all parties to maintain a constructive attitude to foster better understanding and effective solutions to issues related to human rights in Indonesia.
