Checkpapuanow.com – On Thursday, January 23, 2025, the Papua Provincial Government hosted the Australia Awards in Indonesia (AAI) delegation at the Provincial Government’s meeting room. The event was attended by Papua’s Secretary of the Region, Yohanes Walilo, Assistant 3 for General Administration of the Papua Provincial Government, as well as heads of various departments and Echelon 3 officials from the provincial government.
Tia Naibaho, a representative of AAI, explained that the purpose of their visit was to introduce scholarship opportunities for both civil servants and the general public in Papua. These scholarships are funded by AAI through the Australia Awards program, which offers PhD and Master’s scholarships for higher education. “This program has been in existence since 1953, and it has been part of the Australia-Indonesia partnership in the field of education for 73 years. More than 500 graduates from this program are now contributing to various sectors across Indonesia, including Papua,” said Naibaho.
The program has a long history and continues to play a significant role in enhancing the educational opportunities of Indonesians, especially those in Papua. During the meeting, Assistant 3 for General Administration, Ani Rumbiak, emphasized the strategic nature of this partnership between the Indonesian and Australian governments. “We are proud of the 73-year legacy of this initiative, which has produced numerous graduates across Indonesia. We hope that the program will continue to evolve and provide further opportunities for both Papua’s civil servants and the wider community to enhance their academic qualifications and global perspectives,” she remarked.
The scholarship registration period is set to open from February to April 2025. Papua is one of 15 provinces prioritized for the Australia Awards program. Selected participants will undergo a year-long language course, along with assistance with application procedures and interview preparations. Tia Naibaho further noted, “For specific professions, there are particular standards for the administrative and selection processes. Papua’s inclusion in the 15 targeted provinces ensures easier access for potential applicants, minimizing barriers during the registration process.”
Following the meeting, Papua’s Secretary of the Region, Yohanes Walilo, expressed his strong support for the program. He announced plans to organize an online meeting to socialize the program across all districts and cities in Papua. “This is an excellent opportunity for both the provincial government and the people of Papua. We hope many Papua’s youth will apply, contributing to the development of Papua’s human resources,” he said.
The Australia Awards program is expected to significantly contribute to the enhancement of Papua’s educational standards and foster long-term collaboration between Indonesia and Australia in the education sector.
